The problem
You're guessing what people search for instead of seeing the actual Google queries already showing your website.
Find the Search Terms People Are Using to Find Your Business — Free
Use Google Search Console's free Performance report to find the queries, pages, impressions, clicks, CTR, and average positions that can guide your next SEO decisions.
What you'll need
- A website
- A verified Google Search Console property
- Enough time for Search Console to collect data if the property is new
Fix it
Open Search results performance
In Google Search Console, open Performance → Search results for the website you want to analyze.
Keep in mind: Newly added sites can take time to accumulate useful data.
Turn on the metrics that matter
Review Total clicks, Total impressions, Average CTR, and Average position so you can see both visibility and response to that visibility.
Keep in mind: Don't judge success from position alone; impressions and clicks trends matter too.
Open the Queries tab
Use Queries to see search terms that led Google to show your site. Sort by impressions to find terms where Google is already testing your relevance.
Keep in mind: Search Console omits some rare/anonymized queries, so the table is not every search ever made.
Look for opportunity patterns
Notice relevant queries with meaningful impressions but few clicks, and queries where your position suggests the page is getting close enough to improve.
Keep in mind: A high-impression, low-CTR query may point to a title/snippet or intent mismatch.
Connect a query to the page Google is showing
Click a useful query to filter the report, then open the Pages tab to see which URL received the impressions for that query.
Keep in mind: This prevents you from optimizing the wrong page.
Write down your first three opportunities
Choose three relevant query/page pairs and record the query, page, impressions, clicks, CTR, and position. Use them to decide what content deserves improvement first.
Keep in mind: Prioritize relevance and business value, not vanity keywords.
Test it before you trust it
Pick one query with impressions, click it, open the Pages tab, and verify which page Google is actually showing. Record that query/page pair along with its impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position.
